Ebook About
This book examines the architectural achievements of the Egyptian pyramid builders and how they may have accomplished those deeds. Many of their building techniques we today cannot explain. The baffling puzzle of how the stones were raised is one of these. The big puzzle aside, many minor mysteries are for the first time explained. Egyptologists agree that those performing the heavy labor were conscripted citizens, not slaves. The builders were inventive, motivated, daring, and superbly organized. They made mistakes, the price of innovation. Still, they persevered, and created some of the most impressive monuments in history. This book should help the reader understand the problems the builders faced, and instill admiration of their work.

Book Building the Pyramids: How Did They Do It? Review :

Excellent work. You stuck your neck out. Congratulations. One major problem with the Giza pyramids is why there is no signage. People, in general, write all over their 'stuff' ever since Lascaux cave art. It's certain that those conscripted knew that they were working on "THE BIGGEST THING THAT EVER WAS". You'd think they'd brag about their accomplishments all over the place. Did somebody tell them not to carve any construction details for political/religious reasons??One problem with any ramp theory is the angle of repose of the rubble pile. Most pics show steep angles which would have collapsed by themselves. Put a 60- ton stone on it and down she goes (possibly a reasonably slow descent). How high is your ramp? How wide is it at top and bottom? The King's Chamber 'roof' stones must have some kind of religious symbolism for ... if a mechanical solution ... they would have simply 'corbelled' over it. To get them up, I think they just did the simple "rock & chock" method from the get go. Twenty guys could get -ALL- the blocks up progressively in 1 or 2 days for each course (~meter) as the pyramid rose. I tried to design a device to raise them -each all at once- and found any such devices would be too complicated from an engineering perspective ... would probaby fail and ... required too many guys (~600 with a 10-1 mechanical advantage)."The ancient Egyptians knew where babies come from ... but ... they didn't know what a wheel was" ... WOW!! No Egyptologist will state this explicitly but this must be the truth as they see it. For if they knew what a wheel was, I keep getting construction times on the scale of 8 years after leveling the site. At the halfway point (240 feet), I have them installing 300,000 stones during the inundation period at a rate of 3-5 per minute (popcorn style) ... if and only if ... they can make a wheel. The biggest problem then is quarrying ... not construction. In my book, I took the position not of "How did they do it" but rather "How would I do it" ... given the materials at hand. More fun that way. Thanks for an entertaining and informative read.
If you're looking to buy one book to understand how the ancient Egyptians managed to use simple technologies to construct some of the biggest edifices known to man, spend your money on this one. Bob Moores is a retired mechanical engineer who has devoted more than forty years of his spare time to analyzing the architecture of the pyramids and the real-world techniques available to their builders to quarry, shape, transport, and place millions of massive stones (sorry, aliens and magic were NOT required). Moores is thoroughly familiar with the literature on pyramid construction and seamlessly layers his own research and conclusions onto the existing body of work. He has a real gift for explaining technical concepts in language a layperson can easily grasp, aided in no small part by the inclusion of original photographs and drawings on nearly every page. His writing style is conversational, making this a book you'll enjoy reading and coming back to. I had the sense of being with Moores on his journey of discovery -- not a bad place to spend some summer afternoons!
